Constipation affects everyone at some point in their lives and prune juice is a great place to start for constipation relief. Prune juice can be taken by both adults and children, and can even be prescribed to pregnant women. Prune is nothing more than a dried plum. This fruit does not contain any fiber but that is not why it helps with constipation. This fruit contains fructose and sorbitol – effective agents for helping with constipation problems.

Infrequent bowel movements, less than your normal defecating amounts, harden fecal matter, and or an absence of evacuating of less than 3 times a week can be considered constipation under medical terms. Naturopathic doctors suggest constipation is the infrequency of bowel movements of less than 2 to 3 bowel movements a day.

If constipation is not fixed, even more serious problems can result. Prolonged bouts of constipation can cause hemorrhoids, varicose veins, bad breath, body odor, headaches, and indigestion. Toxins that accumulate can result in an increase risk for colorectal cancer as well. In case you have been constipated for a week, it is advisable to consult your health care professional to confirm that there is no serious underlying problem.

Does prune juice act as a stool softener?
Yes it does. Prune juice supplies simple sugars that help draw fluids to the intestines. This helps to soften the stools and facilitates bowel movements. Contrary to the belief, prune juice does not cause increase blood sugar levels. Prune juice also helps with lowering cholesterol.

I do not like the taste of prune juice, can I mix it?
Prune has been recommended to pregnant women and kids alike. Many do not like the taste of prune juice. You can mix prune juice with another type of juice, preferably organic apple juice. Whole Foods Markets provides a very tasty gallon of organic apple juice for 8 dollars in my area.

How much prune juice do you drink to relieve constipation?
Prune juice works as a natural laxative, so do not over use it. It is recommended that prune juice is used no more than every second day. Use about 5 teaspoons (100ml or 4fl. oz)

How long before prune juice begins to work and flush out my system?
There are many factors that affect the amount of time before prune juice is flushed out of your system. Prune juice has been known to work within 5-6 hours while some to work within 24 hours. If prune juice does not work for you, you may need to consult hour health care provider in giving you something more potent that better suits you. It is important to note that if you are having bad eating diets, this may be thwarting your efforts in constipation relief.
