Have you ever heard of the expression, Health Begins in the Colon?
The Colon: Large Intestine
The large intestine is the second to last portion of the alimentary canal, consisting of the cecum, colon, rectum and anal canal. The small intestine joins the faint crass in the right lower abdomen through the ileal papilla. The gross intestine is a muscular tube about five feet long. The first part of the small blind is called the crass. The gross intestine continues to absorb water and nutrients from food and serves as a storage area of the stool.
The colon has four sections:
- Ascending colon: The first section, starts from the junction area with the thin intestine. The ascending colon extends upwards from the right side of the abdomen.
- Transverse colon: This is the second section and extends through the abdomen on the right side to the left side. The two ends form two flexures called:
- Right Colic Flexure: being the union of the ascending colon with the transverse colon.
- Left Colic Flexure: being the union of the transverse colon to the descending colon.
- Descending colon: This is the third section and continues down the left side.
- Sigmoid colon: The fourth section, so named by the shape of S. The sigmoid colon joins the rectum, and this leads to the anal canal.
The large colon, is the large intestine that receives all the remaining material that has been digested from the small intestine, after all the nutrients have been absorbed in the small intestine. The waste is passed on to an inverted U-shape in the abdomen to thicker walls and larger diameter than previous segments.
The colon’s main function is to convert feces into water in the small intestine, called chyme. Millions of bacteria in the colon produce vitamin K and B as well as hydrogen gas, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and methane. The lining of the colon secretes mucus to lubricate the bowel and facilitate the passage of stool, but it also creates antibodies that protect the system against diseases, and correspond to the secretory immunoglobulin.
Billions of live bacteria live in the intestinal tract, which if held in this part of the body are completely harmless to the individual. These microorganisms feed on the undigested fiber in the stool and help reduce the amount of feces produced.
Although the materials that reach the colon have lost much of its components, the package is still fluid. A certain amount of water is absorbed in the small intestine, approximately equivalent to that provided by the bile and pancreatic juice. The colon’s main function is to absorb water and reduce waste to semisolid consistency. Peristalsis also occurs at a slower rate in the colon. Every so often, the strongest peristalsis expel material into the rectum, usually after meals, due to a reflex mechanism by stimulated contractions.
In one person’s lifespan, the colon expels more than 35 tons of waste. The large intestine has a series of elbows with a LENGTH of approximately 2 meters. As food passes through the colon, the walls begin to accumulate crust in large quantities. A person who is constipated means a delay in the intestines and elimination of feces. Your insides can have between a 40 and 45 degrees Celsius fever on the inside.
Waste, at these temperatures, creates fermentation and putrefaction once held for a day or two. (The example is the fruit: if we subject it to 40 degrees for two days, the fruit will display putrefaction, and if we do it with meat, after a few days it will have worms). These reactions occur in our intestines.
The great thing about this is that fruits and vegetables are so easy on the digestive system, that they do not last a very long time in our colon. The opposite is observed when processed foods and meat enter our digestive system. They usually are slower to digest and if not expelled can lead to constipation.
Constipation can Lead to Problems
A person who is always constipated, is creating toxicity within the intestines. Toxicity within the intestines results in a toxic liver through the vein aorta and is carried through the blood throughout the body, causing pimples, eczema, eyesight problems, acne, itching, etc..
I recommend you looking into our prune juice constipation article and a liver cleanse if you feel that you have a toxic liver.
The Problems Don’t Stop There
The walls in the intestine may increase in mass because the body is retaining stool. The colon is growing, like a balloon, and looks to fill the gaps found by the body. The expansion may reach the lungs and the cardiovascular space. In women, you can wind up pressing the ovaries, causing hormone problems while in men you may wind up compressing the bladder and prostate. It also causes problems in the spine.
How does it work inside?
Example: Each day we take away the garbage bag out. Imagine if we were keeping it in the rooms. After four months, we would have to flee from home to avoid suffocating inside. Our bodies begin to create and not eliminate toxins. The new cells at birth become developed in an infected habitat, in where cells are transformed or die, causing the a degeneration of the body that could lead to serious health problems.
Viable Solutions to our Problems
You can take a natural colon cleansing treatments and combine it with colon hydrotherapy treatments. These are techniques based on complete and thorough washing of the large intestine, which clean easily, and painlessly, allow the fecal matter to become detached off the walls of the bowel. This provides numerous beneficial effects, without previous treatment or harmful secondary effects.
In an article published in Scientific American (February 1998), one can find noted that toxins are 5 to 10 times more available in our homes than outside of them. Toxins are everywhere. Studies today indicate that you can find 300 to 500 toxins that were not found in any human being in 1940.
What are toxins and where do they come from?
A toxin is a substance that creates irritation or adverse effects on the body. They can be produced by pharmaceutical drugs, increased free radicals, stress, drug abuse, normal metabolism, or those obtained by highly rotten food consumption and contamination of food (additives, chemical-pesticides), and last but not least the water contamination and pollution of the environment.
Doesn’t my body already eliminate toxins?
Yes they do. The toxicity occurs in the body when the body is bombarded with more toxins that it can handle. The body is trained to clean all those toxins but once that number is exceeded, the toxins begin to accumulate and create cellular damage, tissue and organ damage. The normal balance in our metabolism becomes disturbed.
Although additives are present in small quantities in the foods we eat, it is estimated that a person with an average diet of today’s society, can consume about 4 kilograms of additives per year.
The intestines play a pivotal role in the clearance of toxins. The liver disables many of the chemically transforming toxins and waste sent to the intestines through the bile. The blood carries wastes to the kidneys and also expels and clears toxins through the lymphatic system, skin (sweat), lungs and mucus from the sinuses.
The colon is the starting point in the internal cleaning. A colon loaded with waste materials that hasn’t excreted or metabolized, will prevent the other organs to complete their jobs in the elimination process.
Rotting waste material increases the growth of bacteria harmful to our health. In a normal colon, the bacteria ratio is 85% of good or friendly bacteria (Bacillus laterosporus) and 15% harmful bacteria. In most people the balance of bacteria is not correct, increasing the burden on the immune system (defense) and the possibility of disease. A probiotic supplement can help introduce beneficial bacteria to the colon that has been eliminated or depleted..
So what! I don’t care! What can toxins do to me?
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, bad breath, and constipation. Many health professionals link this problem to diseases such as arthritis, PMS, high blood pressure, gastritis, irritability, headache, fatigue, obesity, insomnia, lack of energy, prostate problems, stress, poor memory, skin problems and many other ailments.
A good colon cleanse provides an adequate barrier for toxins, bacteria and viruses. For those interested in intestinal health, it is recommended that a colon cleanse be done at least 2 times a year.
Ok. Where can I start this colon cleanse?
Things to Avoid: Starting a colon cleansing program with a change in diet will help the body in the cleaning process. It is recommended that you do not eat meat (poultry or fish), processed foods, alcoholic beverages or soft drinks. A diet based on fruits and vegetables is ideal for the period of colon cleansing.
Water: Drinking plenty of water is vital in this process. To help the body be clean out waste byproducts and remove them from the body, we recommend 8 glasses of water a day.
Fiber: A diet rich in fiber may help to maintain colon health. The fiber can absorb up to 14 times its volume, clean the walls, and prevent toxins and processed foods from sticking to the walls of the intestine.
Some types of natural fiber, trap fat by not letting it get absorbed. Fiber also prevents constipation by helping the transit of fecal bolus through the large intestine. If food moves through the intestine in 24 hours or less, it is less likely to absorb toxins and or for the damaging effects of the microorganisms to take place. With the current diet, we are getting only 1/5 of the fiber we obtained just 50 years ago. The intestinal transit of many people today is 72 hours to 3 days.
